29 Mar Tips for choosing your bridesmaid dresses
After the hustle and bustle of choosing your own wedding dress, it’s now the turn of the bridesmaids. These are arguably the most important clothing items (after the bride’s, of course!), and it can be very hard deciding not only what is best for your wedding, but which are the best fit for the chosen girls. So, to help you out, we’ve gathered together our top tips for choosing the perfect bridesmaid dresses.
The bride’s dress comes first
Your bridesmaid dress choice will depend massively on the style of the bridal gown, so make sure that particular choice has been locked down before the bridesmaid shopping begins. You want to make sure that their outfits flatter the bridal gown – and vice versa!
Pick your bridesmaids
Quite an obvious one, but it’s pretty vital. Make sure you know who’s being chosen to be a part of your bridesmaid squad before making any big dress decisions. You need to consider all shapes and sizes, but once you know who your special girls are, it makes it much easier to decide on the gowns they’ll be wearing.
Consider the season
It’s really important to make sure your bridesmaid dresses match the season. If your wedding is in the height of summer, you may not want to have your girls in long dresses made from thick and heavy materials, and vice versa for winter. It’s good practice to make sure the dresses are season-appropriate – and the bridesmaids will thank you for it also!
Set a budget
Every wedding should have a budget, whether it’s big or small. Giving yourself a cut-off price for the bridesmaid dresses will automatically rule out the ones that aren’t affordable and can help you decide which brands are best for your budget. Also, be aware that if your bridesmaids are contributing to the cost of their dresses, not all may be able to afford a lavish look. Putting a budget on the cost can be a real helping hand for the girls who have less money to spare.
Start looking at styles
As mentioned above, your bridesmaids are likely to have different body shapes, heights and styles, and whilst it’s still your wedding, taking these things into consideration will be much appreciated by your girls! Do you want them all to follow a colour scheme, identical outfits for each, or the same colour and different dresses? Alternatively, there is always an option of having mismatched bridesmaid dresses, which is becoming a really popular trend in recent years.
Make sure you get alterations
Most bridesmaids will find themselves doing a lot of running around on the day as they play a massive role, and will need to be able to move around for pictures and other duties – such as getting the dance floor moving in the evening! Because of this, it’s good to make sure that when the alterations are in flow that the bridesmaids are able to move freely.
Add some finishing touches
Be sure to shop around for accessories to match the dresses – and plan the hairstyles, of course! This can greatly influence your choice of dress – it’s also quite lovely to have the bridesmaid dresses tie in with the suits adorned by the groomsmen, tying the theme together perfectly.
