Four theme ideas to consider when planning your wedding

When you start to plan your wedding, a big question you need to face early on is what type of theme you want to go for. The theme you select will be the starting point for every aspect of your special day – the venue, the lighting, your outfit, the music – to name but a few.

There are many different themes you could pick for your wedding, from more traditional styles through to unique, whimsical ideas. We’ve picked four of our favourite romantic wedding themes that will help set the tone for your big day.

Traditional

We will always hold a place in our hearts for the traditional white wedding. Classic and traditional weddings are the second most popular theme that couples go for, with brides all over the nation recreating girlhood dreams by stepping into that iconic white dress.

If you want to take your traditional wedding to the next level, why not make it a black-tie event. Picture this: guests dressed to the nines, a grand sit-down dinner, ornate flower arrangements, pristine head table, chandeliers… The list goes on.

When it comes to decorating, its best to stick to black and white colours, but metallic colours such as silver, gold and copper can add a touch of glam. We love the idea of tonnes of candles in elegant candle holders, lush florals and greenery, and even a living wall – which provides the perfect backdrop for those Instagram moments.

Rustic

Rustic weddings are gorgeous and have risen in popularity to become one of the most popular styles. Think fairy lights, mason jars (filled with more fairy lights), twine, lace and wooden accessories, combining for that ultimate laidback, homey vibe. If you’re a laidback couple who love DIY, then this is the ultimate theme for you.

Rustic themes work best when used at venues that lend themselves well to this type of style – a barn or a stately home is an ideal choice. Adorn your chosen venue with nature-inspired details such as log slices, sprigs of gypsophila and fern leaves, and experiment with stand-out pieces such as vintage mirror displays, calligraphy signs and hanging glass orbs.

Winter

Winter is a fantastic time of year to tie the knot, and more and more couples are opting to host their wedding during the colder months. If crisp, festive weather and glamorous colour schemes are your type of thing, then this could be the perfect idea for you. Whether you go for a full-on festive style, or a woodland-detailed event, there are plenty of ways to delight your guests on a gorgeous winter’s day.

Why not add a unique twist to your winter wedding by offering hot drinks – a pop-up bar serving hot chocolate, mulled wine and hot brandy is sure to please your guests when cocktail hour arrives. Give your guests cosy blankets to snuggle up under, helping keen them warm when exposed to any outdoor elements of your big day.

Great Gatsby

A roaring twenties Great Gatsby-themed wedding is a great way to max out the fun factor of your wedding day. This is a stunning and memorable way to break from tradition, whilst remaining glamorous and romantic. From eye-catching art deco invites through to decadent desserts and of course, 1920’s-inspired outfits, this a theme that’s bound to get your guests talking.

Gatsby style is all about glitz and opulence, and you’ll want your venue to be embellished with plenty of glitter, pearls and feathers. When it comes to a colour palette, you can’t go wrong with black and gold. Balance out the bold décor with pretty flower arrangements and centrepieces – ivory and green is a great choice to keep the aesthetic elegant, rather than kitschy.
