Five romantic honeymoon destinations

The custom of newlywed’s jetting away on holiday after their wedding first originated in the early-19th-century, with the upper-class choosing to go on a “holiday tour”, which is what we now know as a honeymoon! These days they are a lot more popular, and organising this extravagant holiday should be another (important!) extension of your wedding planning.  Just imagine – the big day is over and you’re officially married – now it’s time to relax, recuperate, and enjoy some precious memories with your new spouse.

Wedding planning, while exciting, can be a major source of stress, and your honeymoon is likely going to be your first real chance to enjoy some quality time together. This is your chance for the perfect start, the most unforgettable, indulgent holiday of your lives. The big question is, where do you go?

Romance is key, of course, but what makes the perfect honeymoon? Whether you want a sun-filled private villa to yourselves, a city break full of exploring, or a cheap but cheerful weekend away, here are our all-time favourite honeymoon destinations, plus some ideas for where to stay, whatever your budget!

  1. The Maldives

Southwest of Sri Lanka, this small nation of islands is tailor-made for ocean-obsessed couples. With white sand and crystal clear waters, the Maldives is home to some of the planet’s most idyllic islands and sunsets – guaranteed to make your heart melt!

One of the most luxurious options to choose from is The Nautilus. More private homes than hotel rooms, you’ll have jewel-like coral walls for a backyard and star-flooded skies for a ceiling! Add into the mix – sustainable ocean-fresh cuisine and some of the world’s best spas and it’s easy to see how you’d want a honeymoon to last a lifetime here…

  1. Venice, Italy

With over 150 canals, 400 bridges and magnificent 16th and 17th century palaces and piazzas, it’s no surprise that Venice is considered one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world. Hop on a Gondola for a tour around the city, marvel at the history and culture on offer, or sit in one of the piazzas with an ‘Aperol spritz’ and take in the romantic views. A popular city break destination year round!

In a city where there are oh-so-picturesquely crumbling palaces to stay in around every dreamlike corner, finding a romantic hotel is no problem at all. Picking the most romantic, however, is almost impossible. If we had to? Ca Maria Adele has been called the most romantic hotel not just in Venice, or even in Italy, but in the whole of Europe!

  1. The Bahamas

Paradise is the only way to describe the Bahamas. Surrounding you with natural beauty and wrapping you in the charm, serenity, and joy that it’s known for, it makes a perfect honeymoon destination. Gorgeous white sand beaches and shimmering aquamarine water greet you everywhere you look, and friendly locals with huge smiles are waiting to greet you! It really is a true paradise getaway for newlyweds.

  1. Santorini, Greece

Greece’s rich history, exceptional food and mesmerising beauty make it an ideal place to set off on a honeymoon, spending at least a few nights amid the postcard beauty of Santorini! Overlooking the cerulean seas and typified by white walls, this is the Greece we’ve all dreamt of. Couples come over to especially enjoy the sunset from Oia, with the views of Thirassia Island, Volcano of Palia and Nea Kameni. The narrow walkways and blue domed churches of the village complement the exotic coastline beside it.

  1. Costa Blanca, Spain

Most associate Costa Blanca with party-central Benidorm, but there are so many other jewels to be discovered along the east coast of Spain. Steering clear of Benidorm, there are many small quintessential towns and villages on the drive from Alicante to Valencia, along with breathtaking views, which make Costa Blanca a perfect place for a romantic road trip.

The small coastal town of Moraira stands out above the rest. The town has pleasantly grown from a small fishing village to an attractive holiday and retirement resort, retaining its considerable charm that attracts visitors from all over Europe. There are plenty of private villas available to rent, but if you want an extra bit of luxury the Hotel Swiss Moraira provides elegant and stylish accommodation just 5 minutes’ drive from the beach.
